Real Tips for a Real Relationship

DO STUFF TOGETHER

The couple that plays together, stays together. Dance, play games, cook, go to concerts/movies/shows together ... Release those feel-good endorphins and strengthen your relationship.

SIMILAR DIET

Oft-overlooked criterion for a peaceful pairing. If she's vegetarian and you like steak, meal issues may cause undue tension in your relationship. Sharing food is pleasurable. And don't forget the apéritifs and coffee. Enjoy!

LITTLE THINGS... MEAN A LOT

Wish each other good morning and good night. Send texts to each other throughout the day. Give each other token gifts "just because". And always make quality time for each other—no matter what.

PARTNER’S CAREER

Be supportive of your partner's career. If she finds football too violent and you're a quarterback, then she may resent you for staying with a job/sport she hates, and you will resent her for negating an intrinsic part of who you are.

RESPECT EACH OTHER'S NEED FOR ALONE TIME

Almost everyone needs some alone time. This doesn't mean that you don't want to be with your loved one; it means that you respect each other's need for some emotional self-care. Whether either one of you wants to read a book, or go work out, or hang out with your friends for a few hours, it's all good. When you take care of yourself, you can take better care of each other.

RELIGION/PHILOSOPHICAL OUTLOOK

Remember the adage "Birds of a feather..." If you are atheist and she is religious, your relationship will be stressful at times. Unless you walk on eggshells. Or you convert. But then you risk resentment creeping in. Having a similar outlook on life strengthens your emotional bond.
